One of the great things about the Temecula wineries is that they attract a large number of outside visitors. People from all throughout California travel to the Temecula Valley to get a little sauced up on some of the local reds and whites, and I for one think this is a wonderful thing. However, the Temecula wineries aren’t all about slamming glass after glass of champagne and snacking on cheese. Believe it or not, the Temecula wineries are also wildly popular among those getting married, and those looking to renew their vows to one another. That was why when Summer and Jay from Pacific Beach contacted me about photographing a wedding renewal ceremony at South Coast Winery (one of my personal favorites), I was on board quicker than Lindsey Lohan could get thrashed at a open bar during cocktail hour. Probably even a little bit quicker!
So everything was set for South Coast Winery in Temecula when I was informed by Summer that plans fell apart and that they would instead be having the ceremony at a location called Bay View Park on Coronado Island. Bay View Park is a small and intimate location, making it the perfect setting for such a event. Therefore, the ceremony site move from Temecula to Coronado wasn’t a bad thing at all. Below are my photos of Ron Burgandy’s turf, and of course Summer and Jay’s vow renewal extravaganza! Let’s go!
 Summer and Jay are both transplants from far away distant galaxies known as South Carolina and Texas. I don’t recall the specifics on exactly how they arrived in Southern California, but I heard them speak frequently about something called the “shake weight” so I can only assume they had some sort of partnership or investment in the fitness product that literally vibrates uncontrollably in a person’s hand. The device sounded pretty exciting.
 I absolutely love it when I get to spend extended time with my clients because it allows me to be a little more creative with some shots. For example, the above images that were taken in the middle of the day in Summer and Jay’s backyard. I used some off-camera lighting to blast a a white curtain that created the silhouette shots. However, I think the best photograph is the one below. A simple note written on a kitchen white board that says it all.
  After the vow renewal, some friends and family gathered at Summer and Jay’s pad to cook up some crawfish, shrimp, and all the fixings. This was the first time I ever ate crawfish so it was a pretty big event in my life. I felt like John Wayne. He probably ate crawfish for breakfast before he killed Indians.
 Although this Temecula wedding photographer had to be a Coronado wedding photographer for the day, I could not have been happier getting to spend my day with such friendly people full of life. Hopefully, my new friends will give me the opportunity to to shoot their next vow renewal ceremony. Congrats Jay & Summer! Making sure that you take the time to pick the best photographer for your wedding is something that can bring up a lot of anxiety for a lot of couples. Are you willing to spend a lot or are you on a budget? How many hours coverage do you need? Your wedding is special so really think about what kind of photography you are going to want? The focus here is to completely take staged group shorts of the guests and the bride and groom themselves, nothing is done naturally. I can tell you that I am definitely not a fan of this form of photography, and this coincides with modern trends as less and less people are opting for this style. The main reason why this style was really popular a couple of decades back was because this was literally the best style from a select few to choose from. Back then these photographers were all using film, and it just wasn’t cost effective or even feasible to shoot more than a certain number of frames. This of course all changed when digital cameras were made the standard.Number 2: Photo Journalism. In a lot of ways this really is the complete opposite to traditional wedding photos. As with traditional based photos, the emphasis is staging, in this style nothing is staged instead everything is captured moment by moment as the day goes on. The best of these photographers will never be noticed. A simple form of photography that entails the photographer going through the day capturing the best of the emotions as they happen. The photographers that are practitioners of this style will be invisible the guests and do their job of just capturing the best moments. Understandably they don’t want to alert guests too much to their presence. This is an amazing style to go with but rarely will you find a photographer that can capture the moment perfectly, but if you do find one then don’t hesitate.Number 3: Contemporary. This is the final style of photos that we are going to view in detail. This form of photography is simply a mix between the two styles we have gone through above. In other words, it attempts to merge the best of both styles. Where traditionalist form of photography is based on directed and staged photos, the goal of a contemporary photographer is to stage shots that are much more natural looking. A lot if not most of the common day photographers that you are going to come across will come under the label of contemporary.I really hope my effort in explaining the different options that you have available to you has helped you make the right choice for you.

“I love this image because of the story I was told after the dance. It’s obviously a lovely moment between mother and son but at the time I didn’t realize the significance. After the song was over, I took my camera to Mom and showed her this image… they had treated me like family all day and I was happy to show her a pretty photo with her son… moms really like that! Her eyes welled up with tears and she told me that the song they had danced to had been his dad’s favourite, and that it was played at his funeral some years ago. She took my hand and with tears rolling down her cheeks and thanked me for freezing that moment for her to remember forever. I’ll never forget it.”

As soon as I met Peter and Dee and heard about their wedding plans I knew two things about them, these are two ambitious people who will not settle for a “it’s been done before” kind of wedding. Every detail was thought out carefully to reflect their personality and to create a unique and fun party for the guests. From the drop dead gorgeous views at the Millenium Hilton downtown where Dee got ready, to the charming NYC east village garden, “La Plaza Cultural” where their ceremony took place, and last but not least the stunning Landmark Loews Jersey Theatre, originally built by the Hollywood film studios for showcasing silent films this wedding was a showstopper. While their wedding showcased the timeless charm of a silent film with the classic car, cobblestone streets, and long navy gowns and dapper black tuxes, Peter and Dee also paid homage to Dee’s culture with the incorporation of South Asian drummers, traditional Indian wedding outfits and henna for all the bridesmaids. The guests were taken back to the theatre’s glamorous past with Dee and Peter’s names shining lights, at the ticket taking booth by a model dressed as a flapper passing out candy cigarettes and movie posters (photographed by yours truly  ) that advertised the night’s feature presentation, “The Wedding.” Jumping out of my chair excited to show you our captures from their beautiful, unique and o-so-cinematic wedding.
Thanks to Carmen Santorelli for her invaluable help on the wedding day. I just love having a second shooter whose taste and abilities have me confident that if by chance I were to drop like a fly mid-wedding she could carry on the show seamlessly. I wanted to share some of my favourite wedding photographs that, for me capture a moment and sum up what weddings are all about. Please feel free to leave any comments below…
This photo grows on me the more I look at it. As a documentary wedding photographer I try to capture natural photographs that tell the story and emotion of a wedding day. This photo could have been a staged one of them under the arch as they came out of church, but I think this works so much better.
I love the interaction and the way that Joe is looking at Gemma’s wedding ring and the fact they are framed by the entrance to the church, which is behind them. You can see the excitement in their faces and whilst they aren’t looking at each other there is strong interaction between them. I love the light and the gust of wind that has puffed up Joe’s jacket tail and Gemma’s wedding dress.This is a real moment that I hope brings those memories flooding back.
It’s quite rare to get a shot of the bride and groom on their own, unless you engineer it in some way, especially just after they have got married and are outside the church. We had planned to get a shot of them walking through a confetti tunnel. This is always a lot of fun and a good way of capturing the bride and groom with their wedding guests. I had a quick chat with them and asked them to wait a moment whilst the ushers and I helped get a tunnel set up.
From my experience it always pays to look back at the couple just after you have left them and sure enough that’s how I got this one. You would really struggle to set this shot up because it would looked staged.
